Megatrends

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are what we want to achieve, while the megatrends are a reflection of the development in today's society. The main connection I can identify between them is how the progress towards achieving the SDGs is affected by the megatrends, both positively and negatively.

For example, the megatrends connected to digitalisation: accelerating technology changes and hyperconnectivity, changing nature of work, and diversification of education and learning, have contributed to positive outcomes in the progress towards several of the goals. These include Goal 4 Quality Education, Goal 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructures. Access to digital technologies has helped, among others, improve education, create work opportunities and promote innovations.

However, the same trends have a negative impact on the progress of achieving the other goals. These include Goal 10 Reduced Inequalities and Goal 13 Climate Action. Digitalisation is unequal because of irregularly distributed skills and access to technology, and job polarization because of automation. The megatrend has a negative impact on climate action because of the increasing use of resources, consumption of energy and waste.

Another consequence is that the megatrends are interconnected and can reinforce each other. For example, the megatrends connected to digitalisation lead to a stronger trend of climate change and environmental degradation, widening inequalities, and increasing influence of new governing systems.

Diversification in education and learning is a relevant megatrend for me as a future teacher. The techniques and perspectives on learning are constantly evolving. There is a reformation in education that facilitates adaptability, accessibility, inclusiveness and collaborations, but leads to increasing challenges with cheating and plagiarism.

In the next 5 years, I believe that education will continue to be personalized with the continued integration of digital learning. In 10 years, I expect digital learning to be a standard in education. In 20 years, I expect AI to be fully integrated in education and a part of an individualised study plan.

A big challenge within education is the inadequate resources. Digital resources can help fill the gaps in resources and help students receive individualised education, which promotes deeper and more meaningful learning. This would help in ensuring quality education. However, by replacing human resources with digital resources, new challenges will arise connected to data security, social relationships and unequal access to technology.
